What exactly is Emergency Lighting

Emertency-Light

Emergency lighting is provided for use when the power supply to a building’s normal lighting fails; this means that any emergency luminaires must have their own, secondary power supply. This may be a central supply from a generator or batteries but will commonly come in the form of self-contained units where batteries and charging units are contained within the light itself.

Emergency lighting positions

The placing of emergency lighting is vital in ensuring all occupants are able to safely navigate their way to and out of emergency exits, as well as being able to locate emergency fire defence equipment, such as extinguishers, Manual call points & FA panel etc, when necessary.

Generally speaking, emergency lighting should cover the following locations: Staircases, high risk and extensive open areas such as sports halls, where individuals may have to cross the space to reach a safe exit point

  • All exit routes and corridor including final exits.

  • Corridors, intersections and changes in the direction of travel within corridors

  • Changes in flooring level such as ramps and steps

  • Doors that are intended for use on or as an evacuation route

  • Access rooms which serve inner rooms

  • The area outside final exits, including assembly points

  • Signage that identifies exit routes and other mandatory information

  • Any facilities for use by disabled persons, including refuge points and toilets. Any communication devices installed at refuge points should also be well lit

  • Plant, Electrical intake and switch rooms

  • Fire safety equipment such as extinguishers, fire alarm call points and emergency shut off control locations

  • First aid equipment areas

Emergency light Testing:

Emergency-light-testIf you are responsible for Residential/commercial premises which have emergency lighting installed, then you will need to make sure that either you, a designated ‘competent person/company’ carry out the regular emergency lighting tests as required by law. Following tests are recommended and should be recorded as per requirement under fire safety order 2005.

Monthly emergency lighting test

The aim of the monthly test is to momentarily check that all luminaries (emergency lights) are in good working state and clean. This test can be carried out by client as long as following correct procedures are following by competent personal. This test should only last till functional test is completed and all light been checked.

  • Visually check all Emergency light are in place, charging and not broken.

  • Simulate a mains failure (usually with an emergency lighting test-key supplied by your fire safety provider)

  • Walk around to check that every emergency light is illuminated

  • Reinstate the power back to emergency light.

  • Visually check second time that all emergency light have got power restored and charging battery (by led indication)

  • Record the logs of monthly test in log books including any failed units. Contact fire safety service provider for failed unit repairs.

Because an emergency lighting test requires switching off the main lights circuit (to simulate a power cut), it can be disruptive for some businesses so you may want to consider carrying out this test out of hours, perhaps at dusk so that it is easy to see if the emergency lights are illuminated.

Annual Emergency lighting test

It is recommend that your annual emergency light test is carried out by a fire safety professional as it take extensive testing and checking of emergency lighting systems for compliance of relevant standard BS 5266. After successful testing we will issue emergency light test certificate for your records.
Emergency-light
Annual test is a ‘full discharge’ test for rated duration. It is conducted to test that your emergency light batteries last as long as they should and meet the minimum legal requirement. Test outcome must be recorded in fire safety logbooks. Any failed batteries or lighting tubes should be replaced as quickly as possible following the test, and any more serious faults should be immediately investigated.
